Port Macquarie is a favourite holiday destination for tens of thousands of Australian families. Its ideal temperate climate, a choice of sensational beaches, great surf breaks and a massive river estuarine system with direct ocean access all make Port Macquarie a boating and fishing enthusiasts dream. The city itself has a bustling business district with modern shopping malls, great restaurants and cafes as well as plenty of the freshest seafood caught by the local commercial fishermen. It is a favourite stopover for travellers heading north along the Pacific Highway and yachties cruising along the coast. Port Macquarie is also a prime holiday destination for graziers from the New England areas of Tamworth and Armidale as there is a magnificent drive across Waterfall Way which travels through the rich farming lands on the high inland plateau, down the range through the tall eucalypt forests and waterfalls and then through the nearby timber town of Wauchope which is only about thirty kilometres from Port Macquarie.

Port Macquarie is very easy to get to. Many families drive and Port is serviced by an excellent highway from Sydney and Brisbane. It is about four hours drive north of Sydney. There is an airport with regular quantaslink flights and regular coach services call into town. When you get there, there is a fantastic selection of Port Macquarie accommodation. There are a number of quality holiday resorts as well as modern holiday apartments and an array of holiday homes to choose from. The town is hilly and elevated above the beaches and the river. Consequently, much of the Port Macquarie accommodation has an excellent water view and most is within walking distance of the main city commercial area.

There is plenty to do in and around Port Macquarie. There is a choice of five great surfing beaches. Fishing charters and whale watching trips operate from the main waterfront marina and there are hire boats and paddle skis available to hire. A short drive to the west will take you to some of Australia’s most beautiful coastal forests and National Parks. Hiking and horse riding trails through the rainforests will take you back to revisit the fantastic sights and sounds you may remember from your younger days. This really is one of the great family holiday destinations were there is something for everyone.
